They have their own likes and dislikes. A cat likes cheese. The other generally dislikes human food. A person likes to sit on the sofa. The other likes to sit near me. A person likes to be brushed. The other did not. Sometimes they are too excited, sometimes they are a little grumpy, sometimes they are just cute pigeons. you understood.

Over the years, I have provided food for these animals when necessary. Food, water, trash cans, veterinary care, and of course entertainment. They have a whole box of toys. I would pick up the toys and put them back in the box from time to time, but it doesn't matter if they take them out and play with them. But some... some always stay in the box.
