Police in Apple Valley showed up to a home on Cuyamaca Road for a report of a disturbance.

AVPD say that Jeddidiah Schulz refused to return three cats that belonged to the reporting party. While speaking to Schulz, something didn't smell right to deputies.

Authorities could see a three-year-old child in the living room with several cats running around and noticed an extremely strong odor of cat urine coming from inside the home.

The incident happened on Saturday, May 21, just after 6:00 pm. While at the home over 50 cats, several exotic birds, lizards, and dogs were discovered by law enforcement, "The entire home was covered with wood chips that the cats used as a litter box. It was also discovered the child was sleeping in a closet, and his bedding was covered in cat urine."

The child was placed in the care of Child Family Services, and Apple Valley Animal Control Officers responded to tend to the animals.

A spokesperson for AVPD was asked by HD Daily News if police had ever come to this residence before over the years regarding animals or a welfare check. Call records show that AVPD assisted another agency with a well-check in February 2021, however, it was reported that nothing suspicious popped up during that check and also the child appeared to be healthy and happy.

Schulz was arrested and booked at the High Desert Detention Center for child cruelty and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
