BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Broad View Eye Center is offering a new technology that helps to significantly slow down myopia (nearsightedness) progression in kids, plus reduces the risk for eye diseases.

Myopia is not just about needing glasses or contacts to see far. Myopia is actually a risk factor for eye diseases such as retinal detachments, cataracts, glaucoma and myopic maculopathy.

With increased screen time and less time spent outdoors, myopia has dramatically risen in recent years. Since the 1970s, the number of nearsighted people has risen from 25 percent to 42 percent (and estimated to be at 58 percent by 2050).

Up until now, eye doctors only prescribed glasses or contact lenses, but nothing to slow nearsightedness or correct it. That’s changing.

Broad View Eye Center has tools to slow down myopia progression in kids ages 8-12 through either the use of a daily eye drop or special soft contact lenses.

New research shows that kids who are prescribed these daily disposable contact lenses called MiSight showed a 59 percent reduction in prescription change and a 52 percent reduction in the elongation of the eye (which leads to myopia).

The lens works by changing the focal point of the light that enters the eye to a point in front of the retina, which over time reduces the lengthening of the retina, therefore reducing the myopic progression.

The doctors at Broad View Eye Center are actively prescribing these special lenses to children. To learn more, go to www.broadvieweyecenter.com.

Broad View Eye Center has three locations: 1261 Royalton Road in Broadview Heights, 11925 Pearl Road in Strongsville and 1318 W. Bagley Road in Berea.
