Wilbur the orange tabby has been waiting waiting for a forever home at the Claremore Animal Shelter since early June.

Supervisor Jean Hurst said all 18 cat kennels are full. Wilbur is one of 23 cats waiting.

Hurst said it’s “cat season” – the summer months (from May to August) is when cats have kittens.

Hurst said numbers vary regarding how many cats are taken to the shelter. Some weeks they get one cat, while other weeks they can see up to 10, she said.

As of May 2022, 65 dogs and 36 cats have been adopted out of the shelter this year. Hurst said the cat adoption numbers are down by 16 from last year.

As the shelter fills, Hurst said they are in need of non-clumping kitty litter, canned kitten food and indoor formula cat food. Items needed year-round include non-scented bleach, liquid laundry detergent, dawn and apple cider vinegar.

Hurst said cats are held to the same “leash laws” that apply to dogs. Cats can not roam, they have to be vaccinated and registered with the city, she said.

By having the cat or dog registered with the city, Hurst said it provides ownership documentation for the animal and requires owners to take their animal to the vet to get their rabies vaccine.

Hurst said the rabies vaccine has to be administered by a licensed veterinarian.

The Claremore Animal Shelter is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The shelter is located at 815 Ramm Road.
