Everybody loves dogs. Man’s best friend is loyal, attentive, and loves a good belly scratch. Even though dogs bark, shit everywhere, and can be overly needy, you can’t help but smile when around them. But it’s not just real-life dogs that have this effect. Cartoon dogs are just as widely liked. 

Along with being cute, cartoon dogs often possess the ability to talk. Now, who wouldn’t love a talking dog? Many are anthropomorphic creatures who walk on their hind legs and get into all sorts of trouble with their owners. Whether solving crimes like Scooby-Doo or chasing women like Brian from Family Guy, cartoon dogs are the best.

Huckleberry Hound is an anthropomorphic dog who had his own TV show in the 60s. The blue pooch with the North Carolina southern drawl and unusual dog name is always wrongly singing Oh My Darling Clementine . This is a running gag throughout the four seasons of The Huckleberry Hound Show . 

While the show is centered on Huckleberry, it also includes two segments with different characters. One involves Yogi Bear and his sidekick Boo Boo, while the other is about two mice, Pixie and Dixie, and their nemesis, the pet cat Mr. Jinxs. While a success, Yogi Bear quickly became more famous than poor old Huckleberry. He ended up getting his own show that became a monster hit. 

Throughout the decade’s Huckleberry has appeared in a variety of other cartoons, including Robot Chicken and Johnny Bravo . There is also a lot of speculation about his sexuality, with the character coming out as gay in The Simpsons . 

Pluto is the pet dog of Disney favorite Mickey Mouse. Along with his master, Mickey Mouse, and cohorts Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Goofy, Pluto is considered one of the ‘Sensational Six.’ These six characters are hyped as the biggest stars in the Disney universe. 

Unlike many of the other characters in the Disney world, Pluto doesn’t wear clothes. He just sports a green collar around his neck. He also doesn’t talk and has a generally happy-go-lucky demeanor. Pluto often gets himself into all sorts of mischief. 

His first appearance was in the Mickey Mouse film short film The Chain Gang . He quickly began turning up in the majority of movies moving forward, including many of Mickey’s feature-length films. You can also see him in most of the Mickey Mouse animated shows, comics, and several video games.

Cartoon dog names don’t come more obvious than the Big Red Dog. Clifford is not only big but also red. Clifford is the star of a series of 80s children’s books about him and his eight-year-old owner, who is based on the author’s daughter. As well as appearing in book form, Clifford made it as a TV star in several different shows based on his adventures. In 2021 a live-action film adaptation finally saw the light of day and features Jake Whitehall, Darby Camp, and John Cleese. 

The most famous beagle in the world is an anthropomorphic dog by the name of Snoopy. A daydreamer loyal to his owner Charlie Brown, despite often not remembering his name, Snoopy is a cultural icon. He has appeared in all the Peanuts movies and TV series and has also popped up in a variety of comics. 

He has a vivid imagination and often fantasies about being different characters, with the most famous being a World War I pilot. When taking on this persona Snoppy wears an aviator’s helmet and goggles and a scarf. Not only is he popular with kids, but Snoopy became the official mascot of aerospace safety. He even has the Apollo 10 Lunar Module named after him.

The dimwitted pet dog of the Simpson family is a former greyhound racer. After finishing last in a competition, he is adopted by Homer and Bart and quickly becomes part of the Simpson family. Unlike many animated dogs, he acts like a normal canine and doesn’t talk or exhibit any human-like behavior. 

He’s been at the center of a number of major plot points throughout the series. Santa’s Little Helper has been given away, fathered a litter of puppies, saved numerous characters from disaster, and even become an attack dog for Mr. Burns.

Mr Peabody is another anthropomorphic cartoon dog who also happens to be the smartest being in the world. He adopts the red-headed orphan Sherman after he witnesses him being bullied. Together the two go on many adventures, often traveling back in time and interacting with famous historical figures. 

First appearing in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends , the success of Mr Peabody led to the genius dog getting his own series with Sherman, titled Peabody’s Improbable History . There’s even a 2014 3D animated film titled Mr Peabody & Sherman that reimagines the duo’s past and involves the pair having to travel back in time to save the future. 

Scooby-Doo is a talking Great Dane who is best mates with teenager Shaggy Rogers. Along with their friends Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, and Velma Dinkley, the quintet finds themselves caught up solving mysteries, often involving the supernatural and masked villains 

Scooby and Shaggy are cowards and aren’t a lot of help to the group. Obsessed with food, the two are often lured to help solve cases with the promise of Scooby Snacks. What these are, nobody quite knows, but they must be tasty. Despite their shortcomings, the two are great friends and loyal to each other and the team. They provide much comic relief, with Scooby even having his own catchphrase; “Scooby-Dooby-Doo!”

Scooby-Doo, along with his friends, appears in dozens of movies and TV shows. Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? is the most current series featuring Scooby and the gang. He has also popped up in four live-action films, with the first two being extremely popular thanks to the cast consisting of Freddie Prize Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard, and Linda Cardellini.

Toy Story isn’t just about Woody and Buzz Lightyear. There are plenty of other great characters in the franchise, including Slinky Dog. The toy Daschund has a slinky for a body and possesses a Southern accent. He’s best known for his catchphrase, “Golly bob-howdy!” a phrase Ernest fans will be familiar with. 

Slinky has featured in all four Toy Story films, along with a number of spin-offs and short films. He even has a couple of rides named after him at various Disney theme parks.

As there are so many great animated dogs on this show, it’s easier to lump them all in together. The famous cartoon dogs on this show are part of a search and rescue crew. Each member has a specific skill, such as policeman, firefighter, etc., and they live in doghouses that can transform into vehicles. The group is led by 10-year-old human Ryder and all the puppies can talk, which is helpful when they are trying to rescue others.

Paw Patrol is a massive hit with young children. First airing in 2014, the show is currently in its ninth season, with a tenth having been given the green light. It continues to draw big numbers viewers-wise and is much loved by many celebrities. 

Bojack Horseman has to be one of the funniest animated shows going around. Not only is it a genius show about an anamorphic horse who happens to be a washed-up 90s sitcom, but the themes addressed give it an adult edge. As well as addressing depression, sexuality, and addiction, many of the episodes discuss topical events.

One of the series’ great characters is Mr Peanutbutter. The former rival of Bokjack is a cheerful Labrador Retriever who has a fondness for Bojack despite their differences. He is often involved in harebrained business schemes with slacker Todd Chavez and was once married to Jessica Biel.

Wes Anderson makes interesting films. One such example is Isle of the Dogs. This stop-motion animated flick is about a canine flu that spreads throughout Japan. In fear of the disease mutating and infecting humans, all dogs are put on Trash Island. 

Six months later the mayor’s nephew, Atari Kobayashi, travels to the island in search of his pet dog Spots. He is met by a stray named Chief (Bryan Cranston) who decides to help Atari on his quest. 

Isle of the Dogs is a great flick full of quirky moments and absorbing dialogue. Cranston is fantastic as Chief, with his familiar voice giving the short-haired Oceanic speckle-eared sport hound a loveable quality. 

The pet dog of the Griffin family is one of the great modern day cartoon dogs. While his cartoon dog name isn’t great, his character is. A favorite of many, Brain is an 8-year-old talking Labrador who believes himself to be smarter than everyone else. He loves a martini and is somewhat of a lady’s man. While he is Peter’s best friend, he often finds himself getting into mischief with Stewie, the Griffin’s one-year-old son.

Of all the characters on the show, Brain is by far the best. As well as being hilarious, he is part of some of the more wacky storylines and always delivers a few good zingers. 

The Pickle’s family dog is a wonderful companion of Tommy in The Rugrats series. This cartoon dog is loyal to not only Tommy but all the other babies and will do anything to protect them. This is best shown in The Rugrats Movie when Spike fights Scar Scout, a wolf who is stalking the babies. He saves the day and is reunited with the babies at the end, much to Tommy’s relief. 

While the brown doggo with spots never talks in the animated series or first couple of movies, he does have a voice in The Rugrats Go Wild . This is a crossover movie featuring characters from the series The Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys . In this film, Bruce Willis voices Spike and does a fine job. 

Despite being a dog Odie is the best friend of the cat Garfield. While appearing a little dopey, the yellow-furred, brown-eared dog is actually fairly smart and a loyal pal. He is constantly panting with his large tongue always hanging out of his mouth, often causing pools of drool to form. 

Odie has appeared in just about every form of Garfield media available, from comics and video games to TV series and films. And while he doesn’t talk, Garfield understands all his barks. 

While Pluto is a famous cartoon dog who acts like a dog, Goofy is a cartoon dog who acts like a human. He’s a is a tall, anthropomorphic dog with two big teeth who is usually portrayed as clumsy. He often sports blue pants, a mustard-colored turtle neck, a black vest, white gloves, and a blue fedora. 

A good friend of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Goofy appears in many different Disney properties. He made his first appearance in the animated movie Mickey’s Revue and has gone on to appear in TV shows, a comic strip, and video games.
