Evanston, Illinois-The Evanston Animal Shelter is crowded with cats from the same house.

"By the end of the first day, at about 10 o'clock in the evening, we had 29 cats, and then in the next three and a half days, it increased to 42," said Nancy Metz, the feline supervisor.

The situation unfolded in August, when the Evanston Animal Shelter received a call from the fire department that about six or eight cats were rescued from the house fire.

Maize responded to the scene, unable to believe what she found.

"I stood there for a while, and I saw all these faces looking at me, and I cried for a while. I think it's very different from anything we've ever dealt with," she recalled.

More than three dozen rescues require antibiotics for infections, sterilization and sterilization operations, tooth extractions and vaccinations.

"There are 300 cans of cat food every week, hundreds of pounds of cat litter," Maizer said.

It is also difficult for volunteers to distinguish these cats.

"Just like in the case of hoarding houses, there are a lot of inbreeding, so there are a lot of orange cats," Maizer said.

In order to find a permanent home for cats and make them more memorable for the public, the shelter decided to call them "ice cream cats" and used Baskin Robbins' slogan of more than 31 flavors to express their appeal.

There are coffee, black walnuts, marshmallows and lemon custard.

Metz said that these cats’ personalities were the best she had encountered in the shelter. But the cost of caring for a cat is huge, so far it is almost 25,000 US dollars.

This small building is not large enough to accommodate all the new cats, so the shelter is currently renting a storefront on the street where cats can perch on the windows and wait for their new owners.

"We never thought about it. We never sat down and said can we do this? They lost their teeth, what can we do? It's just, it happened."

The shelter offers two-in-one deals for these cats because they like to be together. If you cannot adopt, they are also looking for foster families. For more information, please visit www.EvanstonAnimalShelter.net.
