Letter was sent home to parents in the Homer-Center School District

The principals of the Homer-Center High School and Elementary Schools are shutting down Facebook rumors that kitty litter boxes were placed in the restroom of the district’s schools to accommodate students who allegedly identify as cats.

The principals sent home a letter to parents earlier this week in response to a Facebook post that they said made these claims.

The letter said they had also received calls that high school students were leading other students through the halls with a leash because students identify as dogs.

Those claims, the principals say, are also untrue.

The kitty litter claim is similar to a hoax that was debunked by the Associated Press earlier this year.

At the time, the AP called the claim nonsensical and said it had “lit up parent Facebook groups and school board meetings across the country since December.”

The principals in Homer-Center wrote in their letter that they appreciate the families who reached out to the schools to seek the accuracy or inaccuracy of the online post.

They said they look forward to placing the rumors to rest.
